A catalytic converter is a device that's fitted to the exhaust system of your car. It allows your vehicle to operate more cleanly and efficiently by burning off harmful pollutants before they have an opportunity to pollute the air around you. Catalytic Converters are required on all vehicles, new and old. For a while now, cars have been required to have catalytic converters with them at all times (which is why you may see the name on your vehicle's engine).
Catalytic converters use an oxidizer such as a special type of varnish made from ammonia, urea, and water. This substance reacts with gasoline to create an air-fuel mixture that can be used in an internal combustion engine. The converter does not actually burn the fuel; it simply tricks the car's internal combustion engine into making it think that it has already burned all of the fuel in its cylinders by releasing small amounts of unburned gas back into the intake system.
With greater efficiency comes reduced emissions, which means less pollution in the air that we breathe. A good way to think about this is taking a traditional car from 1975, which would produce somewhere around 5,000 cubic centimeters of exhaust per second, and compare it with the same car from today—using modern technology, it produces only 1 cubic centimeter of exhaust per second! That's 4999/1 = 499 times less pollution!
Your car gets cleaner, smog-free gas that burns more efficiently. The fuel injection pump doesn't need to work as hard since its job has been made simpler by reducing all of the impurities in your fuel source: no carbon deposits left over from incomplete combustion and no excess unburned fuel molecules passing through your engine without contributing any energy whatsoever. The engine itself will run smoother overall because there are fewer contaminants for its internal parts to deal with; this translates into increased engine longevity.
The benefits don't stop there: since properly functioning catalytic converters can reduce emissions so much, they're able to bring along many other positive side effects like improved power output and better acceleration (since there's less wasted energy as heat). In addition, these improvements can be sustained even after repeated use—unlike traditional filters that need replacing frequently.
